History of the holiday
On March 11, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Lithuanian SSR proclaimed the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Lithuania by adopting the Act of Restoration of the Independent State of Lithuania. Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare its independence from the USSR.
This date symbolizes the end of a long period of occupation that began in 1940, when Lithuania was incorporated into the Soviet Union. The declaration of independence was the culmination of a peaceful struggle for freedom known as Sąjūdis, a national revival movement.
How is the holiday celebrated?
Official events. Ceremonies are held in the capital, Vilnius, attended by government officials, military officials, and members of the public. Congratulations are read out, flowers are laid at monuments to independence fighters.
Concerts and cultural programs. Concerts, exhibitions and festivals dedicated to Lithuanian culture, history and traditions are organized in all major cities.
Patriotic events. National flags are hung on buildings, and history lessons and thematic events are held in schools and universities.
A minute of silence. On this day, Lithuanians remember those who gave their lives for the freedom of the country.
